Energia designer Vladimir Syromiatnikov (far right) was always ready to explore novel space concepts. It was his department that undertook the tether work for MirCorp that was later blocked by the U.S. State Department. His specialists had earlier worked on the imaginative orbital light producing Znamya project. Here Rick Tumlinson, the author and Gus Gardellini are joined by two of his most prized assistants, Oleg Saprykin and Ali Botvinko.
